Solo travel as a woman is not about conquering places or ticking off landmarks. It is about presence, respect, curiosity and joy. It is about stepping into environments far older than yourself and allowing them to slow you, humble you and quietly reshape how you see the world and your place within it.

Peru surprised me deeply. From the layered history of Cusco, to the sacred silence of the Inca Trail, to the breathing intensity of the Amazon rainforest, this journey reminded me that courage is not always loud. Sometimes it is soft, steady and rooted in trust.

This was my six-day Peruvian journey as a solo woman traveller — a celebration of history, nature, endurance and quiet strength.

Day One — Cusco: Altitude, History & First Impressions

Cusco greets you with thin air, ancient stone and layered cultures. At 3,399 metres above sea level, even simple movement becomes deliberate. Despite being fit and prepared, the altitude made itself known immediately.

Walking through the city, Inca stonework forms the foundations of colonial buildings, holding centuries of history beneath your feet.

Cusco City Tour

A half-day guided city tour proved to be the ideal way to acclimatise. Beginning at the Plaza de Armas and Cusco Cathedral, we moved through Qorikancha — the Temple of the Sun — where Spanish architecture was built directly upon Inca foundations.

The journey continued uphill to Sacsayhuamán, Q’enqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay, where precision stonework and flowing water channels reveal the Incas’ mastery of engineering and reverence for nature.

Palacio del Inka

Staying at the Palacio del Inka added depth to the experience. Thoughtful hospitality, cultural performances and historic surroundings created a meaningful pause within the journey.

Day Two — The Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley unfolds gently — wide skies, agricultural terraces and villages shaped by altitude and tradition. Stops in Chinchero, Moray and Ollantaytambo reveal the Incas as master engineers and custodians of the land.

Days Three & Four — The Inca Trail & Machu Picchu

Walking the Inca Trail is both physical and meditative. Ancient paths once used for food, stories and devotion lead to Machu Picchu — the spiritual heart of the empire.

Climbing Wayna Picchu became the highlight of the journey — challenging, joyful and deeply rewarding.

Days Five to Seven — The Amazon

The Amazon moves to a different rhythm. Jungle sounds, wildlife and guided exploration offered restoration, safety and connection.

Reflections

Peru offered perspective, challenge and quiet strength. It reinforced that independence builds trust in yourself, and that courage does not need to be loud to be powerful.
